This is powerful acoustic blues that deserves to be listened to, not at full blast, but at decent volume!
Most tunes are "vintage", but there are some originals here, too. Rory Block has a very percussive guitar style that combines fingerpicking or strumming with hitting the strings.
Tommy Johnson tunes are well represented, but there is some tremndous other material here. Especially delightful is "Rolling log" with some lovely guitar licks. Tommy Johnson's "Big Road" and "Maggie Campbell", and Buddy Boy Hawkins "Hawkins blues" are also favourites of mine. Another great is the rollicking piano-accompanied "Do your duty."
One of the great advantages of this CD is the combination of vintage blues tunes and "feel" with contemporary sound quality. Incidentally, if you ever get chance to see Rory Block in concert, don't miss out - she throws herself 100% into her performance and accompanies herself with powerful foot stomping.
