5.0 out of 5 stars A true gem, 7 Jun. 2009

Recorded in 1981, live in the studio direct to two track digital with no remixing, so the mixing had to be done as they went. Unlike a direct cut analogue recording, one assumes they wouldn't have had to perform each half of the album in a single take, but there would have been no opportunity to tweak each track afterwards.

According to the sleeve notes, they decided on a complement of keyboards which would create the sound color which was required....acoustic piano, mini moog, Oberheim/Polyphonic synthesizer, OBX synthesizer and the Prophet synthesizer, played by Uncle Dave, Ian Underwood and Ed Walsh (who, incidentally, also appeard on Dire Straits' Love Over Gold). The rhythm section consisted of electric guitar (Jeff Mironov), electric bass (Marcus Miller), drums (Harvey Mason) and percussion (Rubens Bassini), with Larry Rosen at the desk at A&R Studios, NYC.

The result is magnificent and it still sounds wonderful all these years on. Mildly jazzy, I suppose, but really just a selection of eight excellent songs, six of which are Dave Grusin originals, one of which is solo piano. It all hangs together superbly well ~ the compositions, the arrangements, the playing and the recording ~ and remains to this day one of my very favourite albums. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tour de force recorded 'live' in the studio, 8 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Mountain Dance ( (Audio CD)
I first heard this album being played as I was browsing in a record shop in Plymouth around 1980. I bought it immediately. (So did my friend who was with me at the time). It blew me away then and still does now.

The incredible musicianship, superb tunes and smooth jazz fusion is made all the more astonishing when you discover that the whole thing was recorded live in the studio in five days direct to a two track digital machine. This means there were no overdubs and no remixing, something I find hard to believe given the complexity of the music.

Grusin, well known for his TV & film themes (such as St Elsewhere), says in the liner notes that the musicians were able to 'rise to the occasion'.

He is not wrong. The result is a masterpiece.

Another replacement of an old cassette tape.

Amazon offered a deal which I took up to download this over Christmas 2008. I am glad I did, very good.

This is real 5 star stuff. Thankfully, I have a Japanese import pressing which should probably be in a vault. Many people know 'friends and strangers' from Ronnie Laws and from Robbie Vincent using it as a backing track on his radio London show, but the rest is fab too. If you love 70s/80s jazz fusion, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, 16 Sept. 2009

I heard this playing as I browsed around Virgin Records in Plymouth about 27 years ago. Bought it on the spot (on vinyl - much better cover). Replaced it on CD some years later (despite the very odd Country & Western cover). Never regretted it. A masterpiece. Jazz fusion, funk and style.
