5.0 out of 5 stars good introduction to contemporary Malaysia and Singapore, 19 Jan 2013
This review is from: Floating on a Malayan Breeze: Travels in Malaysia and Singapore (Paperback)
The title and the subtitle of this book ("travels in Malaysia and Singapore") definitely does not really hit the point of this books. Although the author's travels to Malaysia (he is from Singapore) somehow set a kind of frame to the book, it is much more about the state of society and politics in contemporary Singapore and Malaysia (as it might be expected from an editor with the Economist Intelligence Unit).
Based on the information collected on his travels Sudhir Vadaketh compares various aspects of Malaysia's (or rather the Peninsula's) development since independence with his native Singapore, going from religion, demography, family relations, income distribution to enterpreneurship, nationhood, ethnical questions and democratic participation.
Since he always supports his points with his own experiences and short stories from his travels, you never have the feeling to read dry political essays.
Moreover, (for a book co-edited by the University of Singapore) the author is rather open with criticism, while always staying within certain limits and explaining the background of issues that from a European perspective are sometimes difficult to understand (e.g. bumiputera politics in Malaysia or the dominance of the PAP in Singapore).
So despite of being somewhat deceived by its title (expecting more of a travellogue), I was certainly not disappointed, finding this book an extremely interesting and well written introduction to both countries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Please hurry and stock it, 19 Dec 2012
This review is from: Floating on a Malayan Breeze: Travels in Malaysia and Singapore (Paperback)
I only read what was available in the preview and loved it. As a Singaporean, I grew up with some of my best friends from Malaysia and yes we made fun of each other's countries but never had the personal experience or knowledge of our history, socially or politically to bridge the awkward silence after the laughter died. This book from the little I've read is a noble attempt to address these issues. Amazon, please can you hurry and stock it, I have so many people to give this as presents to!!
