5.0 out of 5 stars Like a glass bead game, 21 Feb 2013
This review is from: Trefethen's Index Cards: Forty Years of Notes About People, Words and Mathematics (Paperback)
"Trefethen's Index Cards" is a remarkable book with an interesting background: beginning in his teenage years, Lloyd N. Trefethen recorded his observations, thoughts and questions on index cards. Forty years later, he opens this unique treasure box to the public.

The book is most likely comparable with Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's "Waste Books" Sudelbücher, but it is more intimate, allowing us to watch the personality of its author unfold from his youth to the eminent mathematician he is today. The author proves not only to be an excellent observer, but also a sharp analyst. Distilling the very essence out of events and ideas, he condenses the material until it gets an almost aphoristic character.
Trefethen likes to play with words and ideas, many episodes are humorous, but quite a number of serious questions and deep thoughts are mixed in. Often surprising twists and unexpected changes of perspective shed new light on situations which we so far believed to be familiar with (for instance "The other moon illusion" on p.270).

Trefethen's original and inspiring ideas, charmingly presented and written in a brilliant style, remind me of shining marbles. Reading the book is like playing some kind of "Glass Bead Game". The invitation to participate in this game is absolutely not restricted to Trefethen's fellow mathematicians - though they will certainly find special pleasure in some anecdotes (like the one on p.54).

Everybody interested in science, writing, music, politics, education, psychology or just in an unusual view on daily life should read this fascinating book.
