5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic record of a unique style, 24 Sep 2014
This review is from: Black and White: The Singapore House 1898-1941 (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic record of a unique style: the 1880 to 1940s saw the development of energy efficient cool houses in Asia. These black and white houses are restricted in most part to the Malay Peninsula and combined British Arts and Crafts with Art Deco.

Air-con, which needs small enclosed spaces to work, did for the design - and explains why so many have fallen into disrepair or been so poorly converted to current use. A less energy-extravagant future will want these historic buildings to signpost a future building style that we will need again!

This is THE photograph book for this architectural style. Read it with the also excellent - The Planter's Bungalow: A Journey Down the Malay Peninsula by Peter Jenkins . The latter book gives a greater coverage of the remaining buildings in Malaysia, as well as much more of the social history and photographs of their past & present residents.

For a photographic style check on Malay Peninsular black and white houses - look up "geoff-inoz" on flicker - but his photos do match the wonderful ones in this book

4.0 out of 5 stars Facinating, 21 Aug 2010
This review is from: Black and White: The Singapore House 1898-1941 (Hardcover)
This book is very evocative of the times. Although I suspect that it will mainly appeal to ex-pats that lived there in the days of colonial Britain, it is a very interesting pictorial snapshot of Singapore. It is such a specialist subject though and if you wanted a more general pictorial history of singapore there is a new book outSingapore - a Pictorial History 1819-2000 which is really informative and well illustrated.
