This review is from: The Days (Paperback)
This is a fabulous book by the Arab world's 'dean of letters'. An autobiography of a literary heavy weight, it is a good introduction to Arab literature for a western audience. Describing the author's formative years in Egypt and France, this is an inspirational tale of the triumph of a formidable intellect over his physical adversity, for he was a blind man born into relative poverty who later became the Minister of Education in Egypt and a pioneering reformer. His tone is never self-pitying and the colourful prose is littered with amusing anecdotes about his contemporaries and teachers, as well it provides a vivid backdrop of political change in Egypt during the Arab Renaissance over the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the writer's most admirable qualities are not only his courage and resolve to tread where angels fear but also his commitment to exposing social truths through the written word, regardless of personal consequence. What shines through these pages is not only his love for his nation and culture but a sympathetic belief in the necessity and compatibility of a productive marriage between East and West. Read it. His words still linger.
