5.0 out of 5 stars Who is the reader?
I was recommended this CD by a friend. I have to confess I was cynical at first but then was hooked very early on. 5.0 out of 5 stars Who is the reader?, 8 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Classic Ghost Stories (Audio CD)
I was recommended this CD by a friend. I have to confess I was cynical at first but then was hooked very early on. The tales themselves are enough to chill the spine but the reader, Stephen Critchlow, certainly created the atmosphere. He has a wonderfully enticing and hypnotic voice which I think is perfect for such a medium as horror. I was transfixed and even pulled over on the M3 to listen to the end.Why isn't Stephen Critchlow a household name? More please....

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Scary, 4 Dec. 2007

This was recommended by a friend for its atmospheric presentation and I was not disappointed! To hear the stories told in this way is certainly more spine-tingling than reading for yourself. Perfect for dark winter nights, but you may not want to listen alone...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ghost Loving Victorians, 8 Dec. 2009
By
M. F. Groves "The Watcher by Night" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Classic Ghost Stories (Audio CD)
Authors of modern ghost stories don't seem able to create that feeling of dread and unease so beloved by the Victorians and personified in this collection. These stories are perfect to listen to on a winter evening - curtains closed against the dark and - best of all - a bright fire casting shadows on the walls!

No tales of vampires or zombies thriving on blood lust; these nightmares happen to ordinary people - just like you or me. After listening to The Signalman I defy you to stand alone near a deserted railway track and feel completely at ease; and beware of digging in strange places - what you find in the earth might 'come back to haunt you' in the most dreadful sense of the words.

These are stories for the imagination, so set the scene, pour a drink #you might need it# and prepare to be 'haunted'.

Very good. I am listening while I am sitting in my car and driving. It is relaxing. I even didn't want to leave the car when I have already reached the target. Classic ghost stories are excellent. The reader even gives the right atmosphere. It is nice horror. I am a fan of this kind or stories anyway. I can recommend this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic tales.., 10 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Classic Ghost Stories (Audio CD)
Classic tales for those who love the eerie and the writings of Dickens and MR James . The stories are from another era and are phychological mysteries which lend a subtle chill, leaving the listener wondering about the characters and how their lives are affected in the end. Well read and atmospheric , Stephen Critchlow is very convincing and draws us into each story . Would recommend to those who enjoy the subtle but nontheless chilling ghost stories.
