5.0 out of 5 stars Deserving of an award., 20 May 2011
This review is from: Dubliners: The Sisters/An Encounter/Araby/Eveline/After the Race/Two Gallante/The Boarding House/A Little Cloud/Counterparts/Clay Pt. 1 (Modern Classics) (Audio CD)
This and all Jim Norton's renditions of Joyce's work are an absolute must and should receive an award. Listening to the work read and acted by an Irish thespian of genius throws open the door into Joyce's world, and in you walk, never to turn back.

This review is from: Dubliners: The Sisters/An Encounter/Araby/Eveline/After the Race/Two Gallante/The Boarding House/A Little Cloud/Counterparts/Clay Pt. 1 (Modern Classics) (Audio CD)
The warm tones of Jim Norton's voice seem to be made for these beautifully crafted and evocative stories. Each tale conjures its own vision of Joyce's early life in Dublin. The strangeness, the mysteries of life and death, the apparently inexplicable actions of adults and a growing awareness of self are all evident.

I originally read Dubliners so long ago that I couldn't remember any of the detail; all that lingered was a deep affection for these wonderful vignettes from Joyce's penetrating observation and imagination.

The set contains a 12 page booklet which includes a useful description of the context of the stories. There are also several photographs of Dublin past, and the timings for each track.

Dubliners Part I CD contains: 'The Sisters', 'An Encounter', 'Araby', 'Eveline', 'After the Race', 'Two Gallants', 'The Boarding House', 'A Little Cloud', 'Counterparts' and 'Clay'.

Impossible to resist.

5.0 out of 5 stars James Joyce's Dubliners on Cassette, 21 Aug 2011

Excellent 3 Cassette recording of Part 1 of James Joyce's collection of short stories'Dubliners' read by well-known Irish actor Jim Norton. Norton brings not just the stories but also the characters to life by acting out the voices. An added bonus is the old background recordings sung by Count John McCormack which lends a very authentic athmosphere to the period. And now that 'Dubliners' has become Dublin's 'One City-One Book' for 2012 these cassettes are an invaluable asset for anyone who likes to read and listen. I have since purchased Part II of the collection and look forward to listening to these readings again and again.
Highly recommended.
