5.0 out of 5 stars Uzbekistan Travels
This is a very readable and easily accessed book which is remarkably well informed and, indeed, full of useful and illuminating information. It has been effectively updated (2012) and as a consequence provides the intending or actual traveller with practical guidelines as well as historical, cultural and political perspectives which serve to contextualise and extend...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference book, not great travel guide
Bought this as it was the only "travel guide" that covered only Uzbekistan. For me it did not work as a travel guide as the descriptions of what to see and how to get around were diffcult to follow in the book and much more of a challange when in the country. The details, stories and historic elements of the book was excellent though and gave us a great deal of...

This is a very readable and easily accessed book which is remarkably well informed and, indeed, full of useful and illuminating information. It has been effectively updated (2012) and as a consequence provides the intending or actual traveller with practical guidelines as well as historical, cultural and political perspectives which serve to contextualise and extend experience. Photographs, maps and brief quotations from relevant sources all serve to complement an excellent text.

Bought this as it was the only "travel guide" that covered only Uzbekistan. For me it did not work as a travel guide as the descriptions of what to see and how to get around were diffcult to follow in the book and much more of a challange when in the country. The details, stories and historic elements of the book was excellent though and gave us a great deal of background. It was also useful to read in the evenings to review what we had seen during the day. My recommondation would be to stick with the the travel guide leaders, Lonely Planet, Frommers etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uzbekistan. A Well Presented and Informative Guide, 7 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Uzbekistan the Golden Road to Samarkand (Odyssey Uzbekistan) (Paperback)
This book is a 'must' for visitors to Uzbekestan. The photographs are of a high quality and the text gives relevant and interesting background information as well as practical details. An example of this is a very helpful sketch plan of the Bibi Khanum mosque in Samarkand and the Shah i Zinda necropolis which are not given in the more popular travel guides. These plans are invaluble when confronted with a new site. There is also a good list of interesting web sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Uzbekistan guidebook, 11 Nov 2012
This review is from: Uzbekistan the Golden Road to Samarkand (Odyssey Uzbekistan) (Paperback)
This is probably the best Uzbekistan guidebook that is currently available on the market. It is heavy on everything: historical information, local culture and customs, practical information as where to sleep, eat and what to see with all the prices listed.
The thing I liked most about this guidebook is the excellent sightseeing routes in every city they recommend, without backtracking.
This was my best friend on my trip to Uzbekistan!

3.0 out of 5 stars not quite what i wanted, 21 Dec 2013

bought in desperation as couldn't find anything by way of guide book to take with me on holiday to Uzbekistan. Lots of useful information not necessarily set out in an easy to find format. More pictures needed as trying to identify Minarets, Mosques, and Mausoleums, which are everywhere and all look alike.

We bought the book in preparation for a holiday in the country. The pictures were enticing and the information very helpful. It was good value for money, as are others in this series.
