I found this book excellent for many reasons such as the fact that the first part of the book deals with what the "the less experienced player" should know and after each chapter you complete you usually have a few illustrative games and a schematic illustration to help you understand the concepts covered in each chapter. Also, you find as you progress through this book that you know a lot more in the sense that concepts already covered by you in earlier chapters pop up here and there in the other chapters that help you understand the more complicated chapters better. Also,I found that the new translation was very helpful because earlier on in the year I took out an older edition of this book and it was much harder to understand. Finally, I would recommend getting this book in its hardback form like I did so as to protect the precious information inside the book. Before you read this book, however, you should have a basic understanding of chess rules and tactics and Aron Nimzowitsch will take you the rest of the way.

I may be swimming against the tide here, but I feel the need to balance the 5 stars others have given.
No doubt a great deal of work has gone into this book, and sound advice abounds.

The information just isn't very accessible; it's a little like walking through soft sand - you don't get very far for the time and energy expended.

I would much rather read Logical Chess Move by Move (Batsford Chess Book), which follows games from the start.

I own about a dozen chess books. Maybe 2 or 3 were good or very good. This is easily the worst book I have.I have no problem with his ideas, but they are so badly explained its not worth the effort.

Imagine my disappointment when I received this book, only to discover that it had been updated to the incomprehensible algebraic notation! I AM NOT A COMPUTER
