This review is from: The Low Sky: Understanding the Dutch (Hardcover)
The intention of this book is admirable: the author tries to give a thoughtful and comprehensive analysis of the character of the Dutch people, focusing on what he sees as their six key traits to illuminate the Dutch mentality. There is lots of interesting material here, with lucid explanations of relevant aspects of Dutch history, politics and culture. Unfortunately, this material is frequently masked by the writing. The book is often dry and dull, and the short sections - which might help to create a snappier pace - do not really alleviate this. If the author had approached his subject with a lighter, wittier touch, I might have enjoyed this more, but the whole thing becomes too weighty. Highly recommended for content, but only if you can sift through the style of writing.
