5.0 out of 5 stars Walter Matthau at his finest
The casting of Polanski's "Pirates" is simply wonderful. Matthau in a "straight" role - if a little over-the-top is a totally believable rascal of the first order ready to beg, "borrow" and steel. 1.0 out of 5 stars in one word, crap
The quality is horrible! Its only good to view on an 1980s TV set. Watching on a modern LCD panel, breaks my heart. They have completely ruined this excellent movie.

Quality-wise its a bit worse than the rip-offs immigrants peddle at you at the Athens flee market.

If it weren't for the exquisite quality packaging and booklet, I would have taken it...

The casting of Polanski's "Pirates" is simply wonderful. Matthau in a "straight" role - if a little over-the-top is a totally believable rascal of the first order ready to beg, "borrow" and steel. This film still seems to be under some sort of suppression in most US-friendly countries probably related to Roman's extended holiday abroad - making acquisition of a copy a tricky task. If ever you've dreamed of gnawing on a Frog's leg or turning down haunch of rat because you've already eaten your fill of gruel or worried about being the blue-plate for a white-tip, this one's for you. We also get an all-too-rare glimpse of Indian Ocean pirate havens. (Oh! And, as expected, the black guy gets hit at the end. What is it with that part of the standard plot, anyway?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pass us a bottle of malaga, Frog, 14 July 2014

This review is from: Pirates 1986 (Walter Matthau, Roman Polanski) -- DVD Region 2 (DVD)
Yes, we all know Polanski's as intense, psychological and meaningful director, but why shouldn't he make a high seas pirate flick as well? Unlike the critics and the audiences of the era, I've loved Pirates since I watched it in the cinema (two or three times, can't remember, it's been a while) and I've been trying to track down an affordable copy of the film for years.

Yes, the quality does not compare to well preserved and remastered Hollywood superproductions (it's a French-Tunisian co-production), and yes, it is a regional, Polish edition of the DVD. But that doesn't make it any less of the film it was. As already mentioned in other reviews, Walter Matthau is just brilliant and as an iconic pirate, he could not just eat Frog, he could swallow a Sparrow (see what I did here?) whole. The character is one thing but he also played his role with his leg strapped to his bum. In the pre-CGI era, actors just had to work that little bit harder...

Don't get me wrong, I also love Pirates of the Caribbean and I've watched (the first one, at least) quite a few times, but I don't think I've seen anything more impressive, within the genre, than the Neptune under full sail. Which, should you wish to, you can visit in Genoa, where it's permanently moored as a museum.

After nearly 30 years, since I saw it first, Pirates remains my favourite pirates' film. Will probably stay there for another 30.

If it weren't for the exquisite quality packaging and booklet, I would have taken it straight to the police as a black market copy.

Unfortunately the booklet is in Polish. In fact everything on that DVD is in Polish. There is even a sticker on the packaging to translate the DVD menus from Polish to English.

One star is too good for this kind of crap.

Avast there landlubber. If it is pirates your after then look no further than this here bounty full box of treasure. With more than a whiff of mutiny in the air Captain Red is going to need all his wits to rescure ( or ravish) beautiful spanish maidens, steal a ship and stave off cutthroats in this high seas adventure. Aharrrr.
