3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars for unrespectful screen ratio
Great boxset with a bunch of valuable extra material but beware ! 3 out of 5 movies do not respect their original screen ratio : Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket and Shining are presented as a 1:78 widescreen.
Maybe this "rectangularization" won't hurt large TV-set owners but remember that Kubrick shot them as 1:33... (which was respected on the "Collection Stanley...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent box set, 8 Mar 2011
I think everyone will have a Kubric film in their list of favourites. I had for a long time rated many of these films highly but without actually wondering why. The extras which details Kubric's life, his passions, motivations and insights reveal why he is such a great cinematographer. Whether it is the smooth lake and road panning shot from The Shining, the majestic and poetic depictioins in 2001, the sadistic punishment and dehamanisation metted out in Full Metal Jacket or the sexual energy, thrill seeking and intrigue of Eyes Wide Shut these are must see classic movies which are unfortunately too rare. The topics are invariably of a nature suitable for adults only but can be experienced by people other than the protagonists, albeit to a much less intense degree. There is an element of prophecy in all the films; whether it is the search for meaning and knowledge in space, a failed and abusive justice system, the inherent weakness of the mind, the realisation of how severe PTSD actually is allied with the true cost of conflict and our awakening to the illusion of democracy which is controlled by a hidden and powerful ruling elite. Perhaps the real genius is that all these films are superbly entertaining irrespective of one's opinions of such controversial subject matter. They appeal to such a wide audience and are not as susceptable to devicive constraints as many other films are with regard to the viewers ethics, interests or even intellect.

Kubric was seen by many as eccentric. However, all truly great people are eccentric or appear somewhat unhinged. Kubric in many ways fits this requirement. These films are true cinematic greats. For those of use who are not too sensitive to experience 18 rated films, these truely rank as masterpieces rich in feel which are visually exciting and have a worthy soundtrack. In common with all fine things, these films seem to improve with age and each time viewed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not 6 discs, but 10 discs..., 4 Mar 2008
I was initially a little confused that all the online stores I could find were listing the Region 1 version of this box set as 10 discs and the Region 2 version as only 6 discs. Never fear though, this is indeed the full 10 Disc set that includes the same brand new special editions that are also available individually.

I am a little disappointed that the DVDs do not feature the new minimalist covers (as featured in the Region 1 version) which I think look great together as a set. Instead, we get the standard artwork for each with the new little icons featured only on the outer box itself.

Still, when you have a host of excellent new extras, proper anamorphic widescreen transfers and some of the greatest films ever made - all for under 40, you can't really complain!!

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars for unrespectful screen ratio, 26 Jan 2010

Great boxset with a bunch of valuable extra material but beware ! 3 out of 5 movies do not respect their original screen ratio : Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket and Shining are presented as a 1:78 widescreen.
Maybe this "rectangularization" won't hurt large TV-set owners but remember that Kubrick shot them as 1:33... (which was respected on the "Collection Stanley Kubrick" DVDs by the same Warner Home Video)

So : 5/5 for the rich extras and the low price but 2/5 for this unrespect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it., 26 Oct 2009

(REAL NAME)
These are five of the greatest movies ever made, and each film is unique, original and visionary.

It's amazing how Kubrick could transfer his genius to different genres.

The documentary's also really good.

I know one reviewer has complained that other films weren't included (I would've been quite glad if I hadn't have had to buy Dr Strangelove separately), but a line has to be drawn somewhere. He says he can understand leaving out Paths of Glory and Barry Lyndon, but not Spartacus. However, many fans and critics consider Barry Lyndon and Paths of Glory to be two of Kubrick's greatest works (indeed, Paths of Glory is 43rd on the IMDB top 250, higher than all of his films except Strangelove), while it could be argued that Spartacus was more of a Kirk Douglas project than a Stanley Kubrick.

Anyway, at this price, one really can't complain about the movies selected for their 10 disc Kubrick collection.

It's also worth mentioning that the packaging is lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great box set, 7 Mar 2009
This box set includes five Stanley Kubrick films in their 2 disc special edition (except Full Metal Jacket which has only 1 disc) and a documentary about Kubrick.
The films are: 2001, A clockwork orange, The shining, Full metal jacket and Eyes wide shut. All movies are in 16:9 anamorphic format and have good quality.
Besides, all movies include English, Spanish and German language. It has the same discs as the Spanish and German editions.

The discs and films are ecxellent of course - but we have some misleading reviews!
Eyes Wide Shut is not the uncut/uncensored version. It is the standard 153 minutes version.
The Shining is the standard 115 minute version NOT the full 145 uncut version. If you are buying this set on the premise of these reviewers that you're going to get the complete versions - then don't buy it. It is simply a nice package of 5 great films and alot of documentaries - but for collectors of the complete prints look elsewhere.

This special edition is extraordinary. The selected 4 movies are great. The CD with interviews and explanations for each movie is very interesting. It helps to better understand both the movies and Stanley Kubrick. I learned a lot.
I'm waiting for a second special edition with Kubrick's other movies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing half hour, 9 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The copy of The Shining in this box set is 115 minutes long. This was the cut version released in Europe and which was generally received badly by critics. This version has been shown a couple of times on UK TV but lately the longer US version has been shown on ITV 4. The US version runs to 144 minutes and is generally more highly regarded. The 115 minute version is the only one so far which has been released in Europe but either this year or next the full version is to be released on DVD. For that reason I only give this box-set three stars.
