This review is from: Pokemon: The Mystery of Mount Moon [Region 1 NTSC] [DVD] [US Import] (DVD)
Following "Pikachu! I Choose You!" would not be an easy task for any Pokémon DVD. Fortunately, this set manages quite nicely indeed, with us meeting a new main character along the way. The three episodes this time are:

-Challenge of the Samurai: Samurai is the first trainer other than Gary and Misty whom Ash meets on his journey and offers us the first chance to see how Ash fares in a Pokémon battle. In the Viridian Forest, Samurai requests that Ash does battle with him to see how he compares to the other three trainers (including Gary) that went on a Pokémon journey from Pallet Town. Unfortunately, the characters encounter a swarm of Beedrill who are none too happy. There's a fair bit of emotion in this episode, but it's let down when one realises Ash isn't actually in the wrong, in spite of Samurai's constant accusations. As for comedy value, Team Rocket's cardboard tank is a fine example of the humour they are now most well known for. This episode also features the Metapod versus Metapod battle, fondly remembered by many as one of the funniest moments from the original season.

-Showdown in Pewter City: Ash, Misty and Pikachu have finally made it to Pewter City. They're welcomed by a mysterious man named Flint who makes a living selling rocks- Pewter City is famous for its Rock-type Pokémon Gym, led by Brock. While he would later become a close friend of Ash, Brock is altogether different person here. Moody and dark, Brock is a tough challenge for Ash, especially since Electric-type Pokémon like Pikachu are ineffective against Rock-types. Luckily, Flint offers his help with an idea to power up Pikachu. The episode offers insight into Brock's past and his family life and this is where most of the emotion stems from. As for humour, there's not too much of that here so as not to water down Brock's backstory, though there are a few moments of comedy from Flint and Team Rocket that stand out. Note that this is the first appearance of Team Rocket's patented pitfall trap!

-Clefairy and the Moonstone: With a new friend in tow, Ash heads towards Mount Moon where he meets Seymour the Scientist, who has a penchant for speaking in rhyme. It seems all is not right at Mount Moon, however, as somebody has set up lighting inside the usually dark cave, confusing the Zubat and drying up the spots the Paras would usually plant their mushrooms. It turns out that Team Rocket is behind the scheme and, when they set their eyes on the Moonstone, it's up to Ash and friends, along with the enigmatic and cute Clefairy, to stop the villains.

While not as good as Pikachu! I Choose You!, this DVD is a fine collection of three good episodes. Showdown in Pewter City! is the best of the three as the others seem to be missing something. All the same, these three episodes are hardly terrible and would make a fine addition to any collection.
