5.0 out of 5 stars A visual treat, 18 Aug. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Aviation: The Early Years (The Hulton Getty picture collection) (Hardcover)
With 350 pages packed with photographs of aviation history from ballooning in 1866 to the crash of the Hindenburg in 1937 this book is a visual treat and a must-have for anyone interested in flying. There are 8 chapters. I liked photographs & descriptions of the following:- Hydrogen-filled balloons in Paris with flights around the Eiffel Tower by Santos-Dumont. Flights by the Wright Brothers and planes copying bird-power (ornithopters). Photos of the people who made history. You can see their determination etched into their faces. Some of the crazy flights made in the early days would now certainly have ended in court cases. Taking off from streets, flying under the Eiffel Tower, landing on beaches. Flying lost its sense of innocence with WW1 and there are some terrific photographs of the machines and magnificent men who flew them. There are classic photographs of the squadrons , the " white scarf" images of combat pilots with their beagle hounds never fades. There are some unique photographs of planes like the 100-passenger Italian Caproni "Capronissimo" which was the world's largest plane in 1921, but fire destroyed it before it flew. There are countless other images which haven't been printed before from the Hulton Getty Picture Collection, which this book uses as its source. You'll be intigued as I was with the wealth of information, which accompanies each photograph The author Peter Almond has researched his subject meticulously and I can thoroughly recommend this book.
