An excellent guide befitting an excellent game
on 13 September 2011
This is my first purchase of a Future Press strategy guide, and I must say they have done an excellent job of it. I can't believe they actually took six months to run through all the different aspects of the game one can master, and their hard work shows on every page of this guide. The guys at Future Press have taken an approach to provide the player with three most likely ways of playing the game: pure stealth, pure combat or a mixture of both. I will be going through some of the points of each chapter.
Chapter 01: System Basics
As an introductory chapter, this is very helpful for players to know the basic operations of the game. The Controls section provides a detailed diagram of the PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers and what each button functions. The PC controls has a table of all the keys the player needs to get through the game and how to use the quick inventory bar. Main Menu section provides a detailed explanation on the options, whether it is to start a new game or toggle the display or gameplay options. Game Menu section covers the different tabs that the players use to arrange their inventory, check mission logs/maps/media, or unlock augmentations. Game Flow section covers the gameplay basics such as difficulty (even describing the different base values for player/enemy health and damage done in each mode), experience level up, health, weapons, buying/selling, augmentations, hacking and stealth/combat.
Chapter 02: Augmentations
This chapter provides a very detailed section on the different augmentations, their uses and cost to buy and upgrade them. It explains how each augmentation works and whether you should be getting them or upgrading them to a better level depending on your play style. Under Recommended Upgrade Paths, the guide offers advice on how best to maximize your Praxis Points on you play style.
Chapter 03: Weapons and Upgrades
This section provides a detailed explanation on the type of weapons that the player will choose to use and best fit with the augmentations at hand. It provides the recommended weapons and augmentations for either a balanced, stealth, close combat, heavy gunner or sniper. The Upgrades section provides a list of upgrades and attachments for the player's weapons and whether they should integrate them. The Weapons section provide a detailed explanation on all the weapons (including DLC weapons from the mission pack) and explosives you can find in the game. Besides a fully detailed image of each weapon, it also details its pros and cons. A table shows the upgrade levels for the weapon's ammo capacity, damage, rate of fire, ammo depletion rate, etc. with accompanying numbers.
Chapter 04: Opponents
A very useful chapter on the AI enemies that oppose the player throughout the game. It describes what the enemies do under stealth and combat situations and how best the players can use these to their advantage. Enemy types are also covered as well, detailing the different variations of opponents whether they be equipped with basic/advanced weapons and armor depending on the class they care categorized to, such as police officers, thugs, armed guards, robots or bosses.
Chapter 05: Walkthrough
A beautiful and detailed walkthrough of the main game. As mentioned earlier, the walkthrough splits into three types: stealth, stealth-combat and combat. For each type, a detailed explanation and section of the map are provided to guide the player through each level.
Chapter 06: Side Quests
As described, a detailed walkthrough of the side quests the player can find throughout the game and the conditions needed to trigger them.
Chapter 07: Extras
This chapter provides a fully detailed profile of all the main characters, a summarization of the main storyline and a completionist guide to obtain all the achievement/trophies in the game. On the back of the chapter, maps of all the sections in the game are detailed here, including the four-numbered codes used to unlock computers/laptops/safes/doors.
Extra Chapter: The Art of Deus Ex: Human Revolution
In this 32-page extra for the Collector's Edition Guide, the crew of Future Press managed to obtain interviews with the makers of Deus Ex: HR as well as many images of concept art. The interviews give an impression of what stuff made it into the game or left on the drawing board and why they are added/left out.
- Extremely detailed guide I have seen in years, very informative and labeled with pictures.
- Movie Codes. A new aspect to strategy guides that provide detailed videos of the walkthrough for those still unable to follow through.
- Design format: clean and neatly arranged for the player to find the information needed.
- Happy to say, none at the moment.
Conclusion: Except for a slightly glaring issue (due to dents made on the top of the front and back covers of my guide from transportation issues), overall a very helpful guide as well as a nice reference books for completionists and collectors alike that I would recommend to. Future Press has done a great job for this guide just as the ones before this, such as Killzone 2/3 and Bayonetta. As this is my first purchase of Future Press guides, I'm now inclined to check out the rest of their publications, with Portal 2 Collector's Edition Guide as the next in my purchase.
