5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal tourist map
Other reviewers don't rate this highly as a map for trekkers. That's because it's aimed at general travel and tourism, not backpackers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nelles North India Map Review
This map is alright as a general touring map at about 25 miles to the inch. There are plans of the middles of Delhi, Srinagar and Agra. The enlarged map of most of Ladakh (without the northernmost and easternmost parts)to about 15m east of Leh at about 10 miles to the inch is also alright, but not right detailed. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nelles North India Map Review, 4 Nov. 2011
This review is from: India North (Special map: Ladakh, Zanskar; City Maps: Agra, Delhi, Sriniagar) (Nelles Map) (Map)
It does show where gompas and other interesting sites are. I haven't found any ideal maps of this area, but the best seem to be the old US Army Map Service maps at 1:250,000 about a quarter inch to the mile. They have 500ft contours and are more detailed than any other Indian maps I've seen. They can be seen online and some of the maps are still for sale online. They can be bought ordered as photocopies from the Royal Geographical Society in London either in person or posted out, but they're quite expensive and out of date. Charlie Loram in 'Trekking in Ladakh' does say they are the best available.

Other reviewers don't rate this highly as a map for trekkers. That's because it's aimed at general travel and tourism, not backpackers.

I'm a frequent visitor to India - without a backpack. I've used other maps of India, as well as Nelles' ones of other parts of the country, and have invariably found Nelles to be the most suitable for my purposes - they're accurate and easy to use, both for planning ahead and, on the day, for showing drivers the route to follow.

This one is a good, double-sided map covering a wide area from Ladakh southwards via Amritsar, Chandigarh and Dehra Dun, Delhi and Bikaner, Ajmer, Jaipur and Agra, down to Gwalior. It's a map of North India, so don't buy it if you're going just to Rajasthan as it doesn't show the whole state. It might be okay if you're heading for Kashmir/Ladakh/Zanskar because the whole of one side of the map is, somewhat inexplicably, devoted almost exclusively to that less-visited region. It usefully includes more-detailed separate maps of central Delhi, Agra and Srinagar.

Like all Nelles' maps of India, this one uses physical relief mapping, so you can more easily estimate heights of locations and regions. It includes international and state boundaries, railways, airports and main roads. Places of interest, archaeological sites and national parks are clearly indicated. Road numbers are shown for main highways. Distances in kilometres are also shown, although volume of traffic and unpredictable road surfaces everywhere in India make these relatively meaningless!

All my Nelles' maps have proved to be fairly resilient to repeated unfolding and re-folding. The German producers state that they're "printed on high quality, durable paper". Although a varnished or plasticized surface would make them a bit more sturdy and longer lasting, they still represent good value for money even if they need replacing after frequent use on a couple of holidays.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why leave out parts of the country, 29 Aug. 2011

This review is from: India North (Special map: Ladakh, Zanskar; City Maps: Agra, Delhi, Sriniagar) (Nelles Map) (Map)
This is a very odd map! First of all it's double sided which is always a bad thing when you want to get an idea of the whole layout. But even worse the reverse show two maps one of which is a close up of the other. The portion being focused on is almost all of the large map. Also for some reason the map does not extend right to edge of the country - maybe no one goes there? I bought the map to track progress of my son's backpacking adventure in northern India but would not recommend it.
