5.0 out of 5 stars THE essential book of pin-up art and artists., 20 Feb 2002

(VINE VOICE)
A 380 page coffee table book bursting at the seams with heart-stopping pin-up art of days gone by.
The majority of the book is concerned with the work of artists between World War II and 1970 although there is a small section at the beginning about the art deco style of the 20's and 30's.
Twenty three artists are featured in their own chapters with a round up of additional artists at the end. There are the obligatory sections on Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas as well as the technical airbrushed look of George Petty and the sultry Sophia Loren-esque paintings of Fritz Willis.
Every single picture innocently purrs "come and get it" to the viewer in a way that more explicit art of today just can't seem to manage. A naughty glimpse of stocking is always superior to a gynaecological survey. This is the stuff that GI's drooled over during the war. It's also the stuff that sold hundreds of products to America, from cola to tobacco.
All in all this is an amazing source of pin-up, most of which doesn't seem available any where else. So buy it.
The high art of cheeky cheesecake for the connosieur.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Art book and a lot of fun, 21 Oct 2011

This title rereleased by Taschen, takes the reader on a journey to discover the best of the pin up genre by the originators and some of the best still out there. It's got artwork by greats like Vargas, Elvgren as well as Al Moore carefully selected by the books authors Charles Martignett and Louis Meisel to give the reader a title to love.

Whilst my own personal tastes for Pin-up is more along the lines of the cheeky cheesecake sense of fun, this book gives you a wonderful journey and a cracking way to get to know the artists who inspired a future generation such as Olivia DeBerardinis, Jennifer Janesko and Luis Royo. A cracking title all round and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
