5.0 out of 5 stars Impressionism - A comprehensive study
An absolutely beautiful and comprehensive guide to Impressionism in two volumes, with plenty of colour plates. The books cover Impressionism from 1860-1920; its prehistory, name, rejection by the Salon and consequent argument for autonomous shows. The first volume covers French Impressionists, and the second covers Impressionism in Europe and North America, and discusses...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
The book is a good guide on the impressionist movement in general. The problem is the small format of the book. Some pictures are tiny and are obviously not suitable for a deeper insight into the work.

An absolutely beautiful and comprehensive guide to Impressionism in two volumes, with plenty of colour plates. The books cover Impressionism from 1860-1920; its prehistory, name, rejection by the Salon and consequent argument for autonomous shows. The first volume covers French Impressionists, and the second covers Impressionism in Europe and North America, and discusses how these artists were influenced by this style and how they adapted it into their own unique interpretation. Post and Neo-Impressionism are discussed. For example, there is discussion of 'The colour of light' and Pointillism. Of the 236 artists featured, there are not only the most famous, but also some of those lesser known. A BRILLIANT BUY AND ANOTHER TASCHEN MASTERPIECE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressionism by Taschen, 12 Oct. 2013

The size of the book is a little disappointing because it is so small. The book is a mere 5 1/2 ins x 6 1/2 ins making reading and enjoyment of the text very difficult. In the terms of the paintings, it is also nearly impossible to grasp the style, layering of colour and density of paint used by the Impressionist artists because the majority of the paintings are half the size of the book. Nonetheless, the book captures the way the artists used their colour palette to capture their sitters and the landscape. For serious art book connoisseurs I would advise choosing another book on Impressionism with a larger format to fully enjoy and appreciate this exciting period of art history.

Price-wise, it is excellent value for money but will I personally use it for artistic inspiration maybe occasionally. Will I use it to increase my knowledge of art history - probably not because of the size of the print.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, don't buy cos it's too small for an art book, 14 Feb. 2013

This is a very well researched, written and illustrated book that I was really looking forward to owning. However, when it arrived it was far smaller than I expected. About the size of a blockbuster paperback. But with over 700 pages, most of each page was curved to the spine so the far too small images were bent over a curve. Not what's needed in an illustrated Art book.

It's too small to be of real use, which is very disappointing considering it's a good book. It really should have been printed as a hardback in normal Tashen Art book size 30X24cms not the measly 19x15cms this was printed in.

I'm a painter, and my Art Books (note the capitals) are like my Bible. But this ended up in a charity shop.
