This is a book about visionaries at the very edge of American cultural experience. It features photographers, artists, actors, publishers and other who had been working on their version of American experience. It is a book about the creative types and its meant for everyone who appreciates creativity in all of its manifestations. It combines Bruce Weber's photographs and interviews with photographs from the previous eras.
The book straddles the line of art photography and photojournalism. For me at least, it falls more on the journalistic side - it provides numerous interviews and background stories, and they carry the book forward. Many are very interesting (I really appreciated learning more about Danny Trejo and his remarkable life story), but I really wish that the images and pictures had been left to tell their own story and speak for the artists.
The book is beautifully designed and it comes with its own hard case. It makes a good addition to any collection of visually enchanting works.
