3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
It is a fascinating book that is actually more appealing than modern images of pornography because of its age.

This review is from: The Rotenberg Collection: Forbidden Erotica (Paperback)
This book shows the reader, in graphic detail, what our grandfathers and grandmothers got up to behind the curtains of the drawing room. It is an interesting, and stimulating, perspective on the fact that whatever the new technological medium (home cine, video, cd-rom, the internet, dvd) the purveyor of pornography will be the first to exploit it, and quite often drive the market. So it was with the camera. What comes as a surprise is how graphic early photographic pornography actually was. The bottom line is that any hard-core pornographic scenario you might see today, was also being done 100 years ago. The only real changes are the hairstyles and the costumes (e.g nuns instead of Miss Whiplash). It only goes to show that there is nothing new in the world of pornography and also, and this is what's going to be a surprise to a lot of people, that the current generation didn't invent sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sperb Collection Of Arousing Victorian/Edwarian Erotic Photography, 6 Aug 2010
By
Clifford (Weymouth, Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rotenberg Collection: Forbidden Erotica (Paperback)
This is a wonderful collection of old erotic photographs, from a period starting in the 1870s, which portray men and women engaged in a variety of erotic acts. Many depictions of the human body in the period concerned felt constrained then, by legal or moral pressures to employ the conceit of being 'artistic', rather than being simply intended to arouse basic human instincts, even though they often have this latter effect even if they are also visually satisfying as 'art'. The work presented here is so explicit in its content that attempts at the former effect would be useless; the many images contained in the volume would have been intended for private collection and minimal display, with arousal being their principal aim. Compared with their modern equivalent the images show a true innocence, unsullied by current commercial standards, and their impact today is probably little different from what it was in the years following the rise of the popular art of photography. They are explicit, although examples that are still illegal or offensive have been avoided, but their erotic innocence shines though constantly. The book contains a huge number of images, and is accompanied by a short essay by Laura Mirsky that sets the art form into social and artistic contexts, and a revealing interview by Mirsky with Mark Rotenberg, the collector and owner of the material. Required reading for those interested in erotic aspects of the Victorian/Edwardian social context.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Collection of Vintage EROTICA!!!, 19 Dec 2008
This review is from: The Rotenberg Collection: Forbidden Erotica (Paperback)
Mark Rotenberg was inspired to begin collecting lost and forgotten erotic photographs after he stumbled upon over a thousand very graphic vintage photos in a dumpster in Brooklyn. His collection now tops out at about 95,000 photos covering the period from 1860 to 1960. This is Taschen's second book centering upon the work in Rotenberg's amazing collection. This is an astounding presentation of vintage hardcore photography. It's amazing how hardcore things were even back then. For anyone who has an interest in vintage erotica this book is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and eye opening....Victorians were not so repressed after all??, 23 April 2008
This review is from: The Rotenberg Collection: Forbidden Erotica (Paperback)
Now this is really eye opening stuff!! You will be slack jawed at the contents of this book. Now, nearly everyone thinks Victorians were stuffy and repressed. Well this collection of victorian hardcore smut proves otherwise. This is huge collection of vintage, once lost erotica. It shows how nothing is really original when it comes to sex, its all been done before by our elders and betters. Except they were wearing very different outfits! Today we have PVC, naughty nurses, dominatrices. Then it was nuns, bloomers and stripey full body swim suits and men with some large handlebar moustaches!!! If you think about it, this was the true innovation in erotica. Pretty much as soon as cameras and photography developed, so did the smut! Insightful and raunchy of course! Add it to your collection today!
