Excellent book with excellent illustrations to the standard expected from Taschen. Is such a big area to discuss within such a small book, but this diversity is handled extremely well and I felt I'd gained a lot of insight from reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Land art, a history, and a "best of " the famous examples., 16 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Land Art: The Earth as Canvas (Taschen Basic Art Series) (Paperback)
This 96 page book manages to cram in a large amount of information, without skimping on great illustrations throughout. The book is educational, but enjoyable too. A good way to be introduced to the subject.

It starts with a 20 page introduction and timeline, then a spread for each artist: a page of text and a full page illustration opposite. A few of the artists included here are: Christo & Jeanne-Claude (Valley Curtain, 1970-72), Walter De Maria (Lightning Field, 1977), Agnes Denes (Wheatfield, 1982), and Michael Heizer (Double Negative, 1969-70, in which 244 800 tons of rock were blasted from the ground).

Also included is the iconic Spiral Jetty, by Robert Smithson (1970), which is in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, and measures 450 metres, by 4.5 metres, and consists of 6783 tons of rock, earth, boulders, salt crystals, algae, and water.

I will end off with a quote by Michael Heizer from this very interesting book: "the art work is not put in a place, it is that place."
