5.0 out of 5 stars Kirchner, 10 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Kirchner: On the Edge of the Abyss of Time (Taschen Basic Art) (Paperback)
This is a very good book, with detailed analysis on his works and his background. His use of colour really stands out in these well printed pages. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, not just those interested in art, as it is a real eye opener! I Loved it!

This review is from: Kirchner: On the Edge of the Abyss of Time (Taschen Basic Art) (Paperback)
Packed with the usual very high quality reproductions that one expects from the very fine Taschen series, doing this remarkable artist full justice. It gets four stars because although it's very well written and the plates are very nicely reproduced, one gets the feeling, as is inevitable with a little book like this that we've barely scratched the surface of a fascinating man in fascinating times. Indeed, as someone who is lately having to write art history essays for an Open University course, I feel myself rather envious of Norbert Wolf's style, and wonder if I will ever be able to write quite so convincingly about paintings and art historical trends. Nonetheless, while Wolf covers art historical aspects very engagingly, one does not feel one has got anywhere near to the man or to the times that he was so intimately responding to. The little Taschen book has served to whet my appetite for a more detailed investigation of Kirchner in particular, and of Die Brucke and German Expressionism more generally.

Nice book and comprehensive but I really wanted a bigger version of Berlin Street scene so I should have checked it out so it's not the fault of the book.
