5.0 out of 5 stars pillow is beautiful, 15 Jan 2012

This review is from: Albrecht Durer (Hardcover)
This is a superb book about an artist who could make pillows look beautiful.

The author of the book asks himself, in the preface, why to write another book about Durer
as over ten thousand titles about this artist were published only up 1971...

Then he goes to explain that this book, based on new discoveries and theses, tries to presents Durer from a very contemporary perspective.

The text is clear, elegant and many times poetic. I've just browsed through the text so far but the graphic quality of the book is excellent and the book is more than worth having
because of its pictures, independent of the text that, from the bits I read, is really informative and enjoyable to read.

The book comes in a protective hard box. It is a big and heavy book that wouldn't fit in a kindle...

Durer was a "universal man", in the words of Vasari, who actually didn't even know the whole spectrum of Durer's art:
Painting, drawing, the graphic arts, architecture, design of glass windows, interior decoration, writing, music, art theory, restoration and more...

This book is a real, astonishing beauty. Going through its pages you will visit a world of beauty, hard work and elevation of the human spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book about a truly brilliant artist, 2 Feb 2013

This review is from: Albrecht Durer (Hardcover)
This is an utterly gorgeous book with excellent text - readable, informative and clear. It is expensive, but worth every penny. And it reminds me why I don't want a Kindle. As a book this is a fabulously beautiful object in its own slipcase. It is also an excellent introduction into Durer's work or for those who are familiar with it.

Durer was not perhaps as much a scientist as Da Vinci, but he was as good if not slightly better as an artist, which is not to belittle Leonardo, but to acknowledge him. The detail, the understanding of what he was seeing and the imaginative quality of his religious work, both printed and painted - and drawn is sublime. I can only imagine what Durer would have done had the camera been invented then.
