5.0 out of 5 stars A VIEW OF A SIGNIFICANT ARTIST, 9 Aug 2005

This review is from: Alberto Giacometti: Sculptures, Paintings, Drawings (Art & Design) (Hardcover)
The son of a Post-Impressionist painter, Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, whose elongated thin figures earned him a reputation as a Surrealist sculptor, spent his early years in the Parisian avant-garde.
In this definitive and skillfully composed overview of the artist's achievements in three media, Giacometti's life and work are presented. We find his first endeavors reflecting the influences of Cubism and primitive art, the attenuated figures that represented the loneliness of modern man, his portraits with his unforgettable concept of the gaze, and his late sculptures identified by the prominence of the head.
The extensive chronology contributed by Reinhold Hohl, an essay by Karin von Maur describing the critical response to Giacometti's work from1925 - 1935, and a critique of the artist's paintings by Lucius Grisebach all greatly enrich this view of one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.
