A soldier returns from the Russian front on leave to find that his house has been bombed and his parents are missing. This is a very human story set in a small town in Hitler's Germany. In his short leave, the young German soldier Gottfried Gräber comes across a childhood girlfriend, Elisabeth, and their ensuing relationship is set against a backdrop of destruction, propaganda and hopelessness..
Strong evocative writing from one of the great novelists of German Twentieth Century Literature. It's a good read.and the German is not too difficult if you are not a fluent speaker.
Possibly a book that you will read and then want to read it again.
Interestingly a film based on the book was produced in the USA in 1958 under the title "A Time to Love and A Time to Die". Directed by Douglas Sirk. Recently it has been re-released on DVD.
