5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent edition of an excellent play, 7 Nov. 2011

(REAL NAME)
Wedekind was one of the most important German playwrights of the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, who had a great influence on Bertolt Brecht and others. Fruhlings Erwachen is one of his most powerful and controversial plays. Its theme of the clash of awakening sexuality with the strict customs of German society of the time was a very sensitive subject and the play caused uproar when first performed.

This edition of this important work is excellent. It is properly laid out, with a good interactive table of contents, and very easy to read and to search. It has no footnotes or academic commentary, but then it is hardly reasonable to expect these in a free edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little play, 30 Nov. 2013

I was so pleased to find this free on the Kindle store!

In this controversial play, Wedekind hits issues of discovering sexuality, abuse and depression in young people on the head in what could be loosely summarised as a "coming-of-age drama", but really really isn't. Or perhaps it is, in a morbid kind of way.

It's a play best approached without much prior knowledge of the plot - at least that's what I found - so I'll refrain from a plot summary and just let you enjoy.

This review is from: Frühlings Erwachen (Paperback)
I had just seen Spring Awakening the Rock Musical so I wanted to read the original again and compare the differences as I'd studied the original play at uni for my German degree. Haven't finished it yet but it's the perfect size for my bag and I'm enjoying it so far.
