5.0 out of 5 stars little gem!
I bought this book on spec, as many others on amazon, without being able to see the content.
What a fantastic find!!

It is essentially an A - Z of fashion and textile terms. Each page is titled in alphabetical sequence, has a word or phrase that is fashion / textiles related, along with a written description and an accompanying illustration / image...

2.0 out of 5 stars Too incomplete for a fashion dictionary!
I am a professional fashion designer, and I bought this dictionary to translate all the technical terminology from Italian to English. Unfortunately this book proved to be too incomplete. There are reported many useless terms instead of other much more important. Usually I find AVA Publishing books very interesting, but not this. I do not recommend to waist your money,...

What a fantastic find!!

It is essentially an A - Z of fashion and textile terms. Each page is titled in alphabetical sequence, has a word or phrase that is fashion / textiles related, along with a written description and an accompanying illustration / image.
Examples range from: applique . block printing . flax . logo . silhouette . tailoring . toile to zeitgeist.

The illustrations are contemporary, the content concise and accurate. I am a HE textiles teacher and have found this to be really useful source of reference for technical as well as more etheral terms.

I do not recommend to waist your money, because on-line there are many free fashion glossary much wider and well written.

1.0 out of 5 stars 'Invaluable Resource'? Try Laughable!, 20 Mar 2014
This review is from: The Visual Dictionary of Fashion Design (Paperback)
This 'guide' is basically a collection of random words/terms relating to fashion (not even fashion design, as it claims), and is absolutely NOT for people with an interest in it - these people would know those terms already! Hell, your average person on the street would be able to explain most of them. There is no thought given to what terms would be useful or needed in a guide such as this, nor to the correlation between the terms included. Example: why include the word Balaclava (an item of clothing yes, but relevance to fashion ends there), and yet omit a USEFUL term to fashion design such as A-Line?

It's a shame, because this is a great idea and the guide is superbly presented - it's just utterly useless and unfit for purpose. Ambrose should stick to graphic design and leave content to someone who actually knows something about fashion... Evidently not the 'prestigious British fashion house' that he collaborated with!
