2.0 out of 5 stars Wigan stays true to format....sadly, 26 Oct 2009
This review is from: Basics Illustration: Sequential Images (Paperback)
The third instalment in the Basics Illustration series, this time dealing with the areas of narrative illustrating, storytelling and industry.

Although Wigan's books are of high aesthetic value and include some wonderful and inspiring examples of some of the forerunners in contemporary illustration, sadly the text includes little information of any real use.

This is a common problem with all the books in the series, as instead of detailed analysis or reasoning (or even consideration), what you get are a series of lists which number far too many to be of any real help as they are so difficult to remember. The text reads as a blur even though the writing is so simplified. It is like a series of bullet points stretched into a counterproductive paragraph.

However, one thing Wigan does in these books that is of some interest is setting easy and yet really enjoyable mini-briefs or exercises that show how the author probably excelled when teaching. But I personally don't look to books like this at the moment for more work to do as I'm already working on several briefs and use texts to consider my approach and how it could be improved and regarded.

There is a useful contacts section that is a boon printed on a refreshing and "just cool for the sake of it" brown rough paper that is another common feature in all the "Basics" books.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Find!, 17 Aug 2010
This review is from: Basics Illustration: Sequential Images (Paperback)
What a find! This book has the content of an academic textbook but maintains the reader's interest throughout with interesting examples and mini-briefs/exercises. After reading this book I felt really encouraged and motivated with a positive understanding of this fascinating aspect of illustration. I've found this is a great book to return to again and again for examples and tips.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depth Sacrificed for Coverage, 13 Feb 2009

This review is from: Basics Illustration: Sequential Images (Paperback)
Length:: 0:20 Mins

This book lacks the depth as a result for covering almost everything related to print and multimedia illustrations.

The chapters teach the what instead of the how. It's like a glossary for the anyone who knows nothing about illustration and wants to learn more.

If you have a specific interest in any specialized field of illustration, you can give this book a miss.

4-star if you're a budding illustrator.
