5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, 1 May 2013
This review is from: Speedbirds : Tome 1, Schneider Trophy 1913-1931 et autres avions de course d'avant-guerre (Hardcover)
'Speedbirds 1913-1931' covers the period between the world wars when numerous designs were developed to break speed records or designed to win competitions such as the Schneider Trophy. It is a book of illustrations (there are no photos) with just enough text (in French) to give the context for the aircraft in question.

The coverage is primarily about the Schneider Trophy sea-planes from early Sopwith Tabloid through to some truly amazing Italian, US and British designs (Macchi, Savoia, Piaggio, Curtiss, Gloster, etc) up to the 1931 outright winner (Supermarine). All beautifully drawn throughout.

But there are also entries for other non-seaplane aircraft that were built solely to break records. These are refered to in the text as 'Guest Planes': Caudron C.561, Bugatti 100P, DH 88 Comet etc.

It is not a detailed one-volume history of the Schneider Trophy by any means as the text is minimal. But the illustrations alone are worth five (5) stars. It is a large format 80-page book of high quality finish, paper and binding.

Truly a labour of love by a top French aviation artist. Inspirational and if you like superbly drawn aviation art covering a fascinating period of rapid technological development - thoroughly recommended.

If art is simply an idiosynchratic method of communicating one's passion for a subject when words aren't up to the job, then this is without doubt a work of art. The drawings are magnificent, combining accuracy with passion and style, and displaying an extraordinary talent. This is the enhanced re-issue in two enlarged tomes of what was formerly a single volume. I have both editions, and treasure them all.
