I love John Singer Sargent's watercolours and have several books on his work, hefty and not cheap but this inexpensive book is one of the best. What makes this book different is that it shows several of the paintings close up, spread across two pages so you can see the brushwork, scratching out, what could be wax resist and occasional dollop of white. The four pages of introduction and technique is in French but I managed translate for free on the internet. Beautiful pictures. Recommended.

This is an excellent book if you're interested in Singer Sargent's watercolour technique. The images are in full colour and large, with a good number of close ups of particular areas. This allows the underdrawing and the brush strokes to be seen very clearly. Be warned that the text is in French but as this is merely quite a short introduction it didn't concern me - I found the book valuable for the images.

Brillant if you want a close up of Sargent's work- which is why I bought it. If you want to read it and don't speak French then you will be at a disadvantage. It is, nevertheless a wonderful book with full page (sometimes 2) reproductions of his work and well worth the money.

there are several pages in french but huge majority of this book is the illustrations - nearly all of them are as good or better than you will find in any book on Sargents watercolours. There are one or two where the intensity of the colour isnt the same as you might have seen of the same painting elsewhere. Not having seen the originals its possible that the images here are more accurate, but equally the colour correction could be out in these images. The book is still well worth its price.

Ok, with a couple of close ups (more wouldn't have hurt). Useful for anyone interested in learning from Singers style.
