I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It reminded me of a cross between Shenmue (the Xbox game) and the films AI and The Ring.

It reminded me of Shenmue (which is one of my favourite xbox games) because you roam around streets and cities, although it's nowhere near as detailed as Shenmue, this really didn't matter. It is by far the best game I have...

This game won't appeal to everyone. For a start it's a point and click adventure with at frequent times long lengthy complex dialogue. Movement especially in the troll like caves bit was horrendous and the fighting is also hard as invariably it is your character you are playing who looses and not your opponent. That aside the attention to detail both in story and graphics...

It is by far the best game I have played since Shenmue, Farenheit and Beyond Good & Evil.

The graphics are good, the load screens don't take too long to load at all, and it autosaves your progress to certain points and you can also save at whatever point you stop at and pick the game up from just where you left it.

You play three different characters in the game, the main one being Zoe Castillo living in Casablanca and set in the future. The other character you play is April Ryan, living in a magical world (Arcadia) from hundreds of years ago. And the third character is Kian, an apostle sent on a mission that puts into doubt everything he believes in.

The story spans three different worlds and many different amazing locations/graphics. All three stories obviously come together and there are lots of twists and turns.

There are also supposedly different outcomes in the game, as you are in charge of story. In other words the story is interactive and you choose what to ask in conversations which ultimately changes how the story plays out (but I've yet to try this out).

Oh and it leaves it open for a sequel!!!

If you love adventure and RPG games - you will love this!

Dreamfall captivates your imagination in such a way, you are sucked into the game and everything starts to feel personal. Luckily, when certain "levels" require you to switch characters, you withdraw slightly. But you still feel as if you are one with the battle to save both Arcadia and Stark.

For those of you that cry at emotional films... be prepared to cry as you finish the game. The last half hour to an hour of the game is filled with mini films; leading to heart tugging decisions which you don't control.

Anyone that enjoys role-play will enjoy this game; there's enough puzzles to keep your heart pumping... enough story to keep you involved... and enough emotions to devastate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interactive film, 27 Aug 2006

I just love this kind of game. Admittedly there isn't that much to do compared with some other types of game, but it's what I would term as an immersive, escapist experience. I thoroughly enjoyed inhabiting its universe and it lasted a decent amount of time too.

The only downside is perhaps one that I don't know enough about. I chose to play this game in French and all the characters' voices were superbly acted. Zoe had just the right balance of sexiness and innocence that she needed and 'Wonkers' (yes, that made me laugh each time) had such a kind and relaxing timbre. I want one of those robots! I played a couple of scenes in English and didn't like that actress's interpretation of Zoe at all. But maybe that was because I had got used to it in French by then, so don't let that put you off. I just thought I'd mention it.

The focus feature was great, I'd like to see that appear in other titles too. You click the left thumbstick and this translucent beam is overlaid onto the scene. You can wheel it around to examine objects that are at various distances from you. It's very handy for identifying objects you can interact with. Sometimes too handy, it made some puzzles very easy. But perhaps the days of "examine table --> you see nothing interesting about the table" are best left in the past.

The music is haunting and majestic, the storyline is always engaging and makes you feel like you could really be living in such a world.

And the graphics, well... Think of how many adventure games you've played where you've said the graphics were very good but you wished they had done this or that. In this game you will have no such moments. I spent ages just gazing at it all and having fun watching how every light was reflected in the wet pavement as I turned the view. At times one can get a little irritated at the slow pace of the character in a game where you have to run around large expanses, in this game I was purposefully making her walk rather than run so I didn't whisk past such amazing environments.

This game made me wish I could erase my memory so I could play it all again. Maybe if I ask Wonkers nicely he'll do just that :-D

This game won't appeal to everyone. For a start it's a point and click adventure with at frequent times long lengthy complex dialogue. Movement especially in the troll like caves bit was horrendous and the fighting is also hard as invariably it is your character you are playing who looses and not your opponent. That aside the attention to detail both in story and graphics is impressive with you the player immersed into a epic story.

Apparently this game is the second in a planned trilogy. As of 2011 it is unclear if part three is pending or has been scraped. Reputed to wrap up the many loose ends left at the end of this second game. the third game should it happen will be called Dreamfall Chapters, apparently.

In conclusion not a action game in the true sense of the word which incorporates a immense complex story full of characters and which ends with more questions unanswered than answered. however for visual appeal I enjoyed it.

I adore this game, having played it a long while ago I decided to purchase it for my new Xbox 360, forgetting however that I cannot yet play it as 360's require an extra removable hard drive/memory card before this can be played! D'oh! Shame on me, but I love the gameplay (although battles can be trying due to slightly jerky responses) The graphics are fantastic, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. There are many different locations to discover and one of the main joys of this game is the backdrops. I enjoy free roaming games more than any other category and so this game is perfect for me as I can take it at my own pace and explore until my heart's content! This game has a strong and innovative storyline which will keep you hooked until the end. I only wish there were more games like this available!

I remember reading about this for ages in the official for ages and saw some lovely scenes online but you don't see hardly any of them in game either in play or the cut scenes, there's very little to do no mini games and talking is kept to a minimum, the combat is the worst every possible as bad as Largo winch and the game play is very short, the extra playable characters make no sense and ad nothing to the story which doesn't even end, this could have been a great game, but was let down badly by the developers,I love this type of game, but sold mine on ebay after 2 play throughs.

i love point and click games so although this has been out a few years it had good reviews and i decided to try it. i found the auto save a problem because if i had missed something going back could be difficult. The game is good but not as enjoyable as some, broken sword and syberia for instance and controlling character movement is truly irritating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique and hypnotic game, now available on Xbox Marketplace, 30 Oct 2009

Andromeda Descendent (Tarn Vedra) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (Xbox) (Video Game)
I'd imagine most of the people now visiting this page are doing so because this game has a new lease of life as one of the Xbox Originals "games on demand", so I'll answer the questions I myself had before I downloaded it from Marketplace.

Although it may seem to be an RPG, it's an adventure/puzzle game set in both in a fantasy universe and a futuristic version of the real world. The story is fixed and, although you are often presented with up to four dialogue choices, they always lead to the same result. You can interact with objects, though this mostly allows the character you are playing (the story has four of them) in that scene to vocalise her or his inner thoughts. You spend more time watching cut-scenes and walking between one cut scene and the next than actually doing anything, although there are several puzzles to complete and some rather basic fight scenes along the way.

So given all that, why on Earth did I enjoy it so much? It's down to four things - the story, the graphics, the voice acting and how simply unhurried it is.

This is actually a sequel to a previous game called The Longest Journey, but you don't need to have played that and I think that not knowing only adds to the wonderment of it, as the mystery and the ambiance of the story is its main attraction. You'll be left with loose ends, be warned, but it seems not to matter as you get the feeling that the worst thing this game could offer you is a sense of closure.

The graphics are only dated by comparison with today. In all other respects they are rich and imaginative. Futuristic Casablanca in particular is stunning, the characters are well designed and move naturally, and the voice acting of the two main characters - Zoe and April - is some of the best you'll find. Zoe's voice and delivery is so natural that you almost feel you know her from real life. She has less polygons than many modern heroines, but her face is so expressive and her personality so well realised that I've fallen a little in love with her. Two other characters - a robot toy called Wonkers and a talking crow called, well, Crow - will also stay with you long after the game itself has ended.

The relaxed nature of the game means that after a while you find you have no idea how near to the end it is. It feels like it could go on forever, and you're mostly just sitting there watching it all unfold. Listening to Zoe or April chatting to other characters as if they have hours to spare becomes, after a while, almost hypnotic. Sadly, because of the nature of the game - as something to be experienced more than something to be played - it has zero immediate replay value, but playing through again could only detract from the memories it leaves you with.

I hope I've conveyed a little of just how good an experience Dreamfall is, but if I lost you at "mostly cut-scenes" you're not going to enjoy this game anyway. It's not a kid's game either - there's adult content and swearing in it, but a lot of innocence too. The narrow audience is probably why work has not started on a sequel yet, but apparently the story is in pre-production and I for one will be buying when it's released.
