4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 23 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Stoner (Paperback)
This novel is the perfect antidote to modern populist writing where five characters tell a story and the plot weaves them together by the end. This wonderful story follows one man's life from his wretched childhood on a farm through to university and then an academic career at the same university. His world is closed and narrow and quiet and he allows events and people to dominate him. You are left screaming - do something - take control - and he does, in the end, have one hollow victory, but it is hollow. I doubt this story will appeal to younger readers who expect to experience jolts at every page. But this is like holding a mirror up to many people's lives, you live, things happen, and then you die.
