5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice item and service
The item was in an excellent condition. However, and I suspect that this was my mistake, it was in French! I'm not sure whether that was obvious or not, probably so, and I didn't notice it? Anyways, other than that it was in perfect condition, arrived promptly, all good!

Patti Smith writes a fairly decent account of her life in this biography – as might be expected, lots of name dropping, but how could it be otherwise with such a well known figure, especially given her enigmatic relationship with the controversial photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe. They lived together in New York from 1967 and on into the 1970s, spending some of their time in the legendary confines of the Chelsea Hotel.

One doesn’t learn much in this book about their relationship, though the length of time they spent together would suggest they had a strong and abiding bond. Mapplethorpe encouraged Smith to write songs and was a staunch supporter of her painting and other exploits. She wrote poetry initially, but later turned to performing as a poet and then with a band. The abiding impression obtained in this sketchy and often ambiguous life story is one of defiance and striving. Smith wasn’t adverse to supporting Mapplethorpe with long stints working in a New York bookstore, and she received his long term encouragement and help artistically in return when it came to her own ambitions. The photographic evidence of their relationship is, once again, sketchy, but there are one or two beautifully moody pictures of the pair in this book. In the end, however, this is just about okay, as long as you’re happy with surface events. The real events are Mapplethorpe’s extraordinarily photography, and Smith’s songs. There’s a useful discography. But on the whole, the book itself is disappointingly sparse when it comes to the detail of their lives together.

It was in French! No indication that it was not in English so I gave it to a French-speaking friend.
