5.0 out of 5 stars I wish my home could be like these
A great source book of ideas. Stylish, yes, but achieveable. Lots of ideas which you can take and make your own. From things you can find second hand and adapt to things you may see new, some great ideas to transform your house into a stylish home.

I was slightly disappointed that this book is more about up-market style than authentic French country homes, which is what I was looking for. To quote the inside sleeve,
"French Country Style at Home invites readers to cross the thresholds of twenty three rural homes where contemporary comfort blends with vintage flair. A renovated mill in Brittany, now a family retreat with fresh white wood and stone floors, features a medley of gently-worn antiques: a Parisian streetlight finds new life in an airy entrance way: a grocery store scale recalls the simple days before the bustle of supermarkets. Further south, an intimate guesthouse welcomes visitors inside its medieval walls where fine linens in shades of grey and mauve soften stone surfaces and wooden beams. An organic bed-and-breakfast nestled in western France combines contemporary sensibilities with traditional country living. Great care was taken in renovating this seventeenth-century family home using local materials and environmentally-conscious techniques; the result is a warm and vibrant paradise celebrating country style".
In fact most of the featured homes are guesthouses or sell antiques and bric-a-brac rather than being typical French homes. It's the opposite of my other book on French country homes, entitled Really Rural: Authentic French Country Interiors: Authentic French Country Style, by Marie-France Boyer, which a number of reviewers thought exploited the poverty of the occupants. I was hoping for something between the two, but maybe Marie-Frances book IS more representative of the reality of the old rural homes in France where the English love of "shabby-chic" is regarded with amusement and incomprehension and the aspiration is for what is modern?
The language of French Country Style at Home is rather too flowery/arty for me personally, I prefer something more readable, but the photographs make this a fine coffee-table book or a worthy addition to a collection of modern interior design books but with a slightly French feel.
