This review is from: Histoire de ma vie (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the most impressive biography I have ever read. It took me by surprise but delighted me. Quite unputdownable! just as well with over 1500 pages to read... In a very honest manner George Sand warned the reader that she would select the facts and circumstances of her life she would write about. One can find the complement of information in her equally voluminous correspondance. "Histoire de ma vie" is a perfect introduction to George Sand's life. Once this has been established we embark on an fascinating exploration of her ancestors' times and life prior to her own birth. This adds a very powerful dimension to the story of her own life and times and the fact that this is so important to her, as it covers one third of the book, provides the reader with additional insight into her personality . Having inherited royal blood from her father's side she never rejected however her mother's humble origins. Throughout her life she embraced those extremes. She was a lady, an intellectual, an artist and a celebrated writer surrounded by the greatest minds and personalities of France and Europe in the XIXth century such as Flaubert, Delacroix, Tourgenev or Chopin and at the same time she cherished the poor, the peasants of Berry, she fought for women's rights, supported the underdog and took an active part in politics. This book brings to life not only a remarkable woman but a whole slice of French history.
