5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book - well, one of them, 14 Mar 2006
This review is from: Manon Lescaut (Paperback)
I read Manon Lescaut for A-level French and - to be honest - found it utter torture at first - the book is split into two parts, with no chapters, all in 18th century French ... and at 16 you kind of miss the point! Then I grew up, and by the time I sat my exam I was hooked. It's a timeless portrait of love to the point of daftness, social mores, snobbery and sordidness...the fallability of man up against the wiles of a woman, who seems cunning and weak by rote - but which is she? This book is touching, maddening and wonderfully louche in parts: in all, comedy, tragedy and classic French style existentialism all rolled into one. Possibly the greatest love story ever told - as borne out by the fact that the story has been used as the basis for a ballet and an opera - but have Hollywood ever 'done' it? They should.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manon Lescaut, 4 Feb 2011
The first thing of which any would-be purchaser needs to be aware is that this an original French version, not an English translation. It is written in a simpler style than one might have expected of a major work of French literature from the mid-18th century that should give no difficulty to anyone with a moderately good grasp of literary French (post-A level). The footnotes in this edition (Petits Classiques Larousse) are particularly helpful in glossing in readily comprehensible modern French words whose meaning has shifted since the work was first published (1731).

This is a very moving tale of the weakness of man when gripped by a relentless passion from which there is no escape

I still cannot say that I love this book after having read it twice. However, it is a wonderful book.
