4.0 out of 5 stars A new strand and a good one
Jack Campbell brings us back again to the universe of the Alliance Confederation and the Syndicate Worlds that we have become familiar with in his Lost Fleet series. This time, however, the heroes are not the crews and commanding officers of the Lost (Alliance) Fleet and Admiral (Black Jack) Geary is no more than an element in the background. Instead, and a bit like Weber...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not such a great spin off
Having really enjoyed the Lost Fleet series, and loved reading about Black Jack Geary's exploits, I had high hopes for this spin off, but sad to say I was disappointed. I just couldn't connect with the two main characters, I didn't find them very interesting and the book just wasn't as exciting as the others, so sorry but bring back more books based on the original...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Lost Fleet, 12 July 2013

It's good but if you loved the Lost Fleet, like me,then you will like this. Perhaps because it is based on the syndics...they are not nice people and whatever justifications they try they still worked within the totalitarian state that was the Syndicate system. Not sure if I will get the rest...

OK so I have read and enjoyed the Lost Fleet and Beyond the Frontier series of novels by Jack Campbell, they are easy to read but by no means overly lightweight. The style of those books continues in this new take on this story line as we experience the struggle for survival in the newly liberated Midway system. I am not going to put in any plot spoilers here. It took a little while to get used to having two protagonists but once I had wrapped my head around that the rest of the book is as you would expect. It is well written Sci-fi without being overblown or overly technical, the characters are solid and well written, the combat sequences are absorbing and action packed, all in all a great addition to the other series in this universe.

A very good book, and yet another set to collect as it appears! LOL
