5.0 out of 5 stars Its a beautiful Noir, 27 Jun 2014

This review is from: Old City Blues (Hardcover)
A fabulous neo-noir reminiscent of Ghost in the Shell via Raymond Chandler. Milonogiannis' frenetic sketchy style flips between simple and heavily etch drawings tell a dark tale of robots and murder that'll have you going right to the end. I loved it, so should you.

In the backmatter for Old City Blues the author explains that it originated from him wanting to do a comic strip that spoke to those comic strips he enjoyed as a kid, and it has to be said that it is fairly obvious just what those comic strips were. The work of Masamune Shirow in Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell is instantly called to mind in this tale of a cop in the future who investigates the death of a cyborg and of a corporate head that is not all it seems. While the art is more an interesting mixture of scratchy ligne claire and bandes desinee, that sometimes veers into sketchiness, a lot of the design of technology and costume recalls Shirow's work and there is a definite debt to be paid.

Told in black and white with tone used, it is an enjoyable cyberpunk story. It lacks the philosophical element of Shirow's work, being a more straightforward thriller. The characters don't live and breathe outside the page, but they're pleasingly archetypal.

The design of the book itself is pleasingly non-typical for a graphic novel, being more the size of a standard b-format book, probably due to the fact that the story was a web comic first and so does not fit the usual size of American comics. It's sturdily bound and quite handsome for that.

It's quite a nice book and I think the artist could develop into something special with support. As a debut work it's fine, through there is a jump in story logic at one point that you just have to accept, if a tad unoriginal.

I bought this for my boyfriend, and he loved it. A good add to the book shelf if you're a comic book fan.
