If you have been serching the internet for interesting cable designs and feel that you have reached a dead end: If you have seen so many pictures of Alice Starman's beautiful designs and been devastated that the book of the patterns is no longer available for anything less than a small fortune, then you'll feel like you're in knitting heaven if you finally resort to spending a little money and buy this book.
The book is visually stunning and the patterns are a dream. Incredibly easy to understand, it has detailed explanations of stitches on each page. The whole pattern is written out in long hand and shown as a chart.
Nobody looking for a seriousluy creative book on cable stitches and patterns could be disappointed with this. I have looked at them all and nothing even comes close!

I already have a few knitting stitch "dictionaries" and often feel it's the case that if you've seen one, you've seen them all. However, I feel that the Vogue book is a definite exception.

Firstly, the swatches. Unlike the Harmony guides, you get a photo of a complete swatch, not just a small rectangle with a close-up of the stitches. So if a pattern is worked over 74 stitches, you get a very wide swatch!

Next, you get both charts and written instructions. I love charts and often resort to typing out my own because they are easier to work from, but often stitch guides don't have them, presumably due to a lack of space. However, this does make for a hefty book and I can foresee many more editions because they simply can't fit more patterns in without compromising the size of the swatches or removing some of the charts.

The swatches are divided into several sections, starting with easy 4 row patterns, moving through lattcies, pretzels to huge and beautiful cable combinations that are worked over 62 rows.

One minor niggle is that the information on how many stitches the pattern is worked over isn't immediately clear. If I'm flicking through looking for a pattern to fit within a certain number of stitches, it's not easy to see as the font is the same as the pattern directions.

And to end on a purely superficial note, I love that the swatches are all in coordinating colours that match the balls of yarn on the cover. The first book had shades of green, this one has browns and greys. It's a beautitful book and I think it will be an invaluable resource.

For anyone who loves knitting cable stitches & who wants to experiment with their own designs, this is a great book. A good variety of cable stitches with difficulty guidance.
I have a number of other good stitch dictionaries but this one contains cable stitches not found in other books. Worth buying.

I haven't gone throug all the book, just fliped some pages, but from what I saw, the book is very good. First, it's not to expensive as it is a hardcover. Second the book is very well structured as it beggins with the simple knits and progresses to the more difficult ones and Third the instructions are very clear and all the designs have a sample, so you can see the final work.

The only bad thing I can remember, is that sometimes they show some ideas, like a sweater or vest, but they don't tell you how it is made.

I strongly recomend the book for beginners and advanced knitters.
