This review is from: Duel, The (Art of the Novella) (Paperback)
This is the orgininal book from the Ridley Scott film which I thought so-so. The story languished upon my shelf for thirty years and then, for my birthday, someone gave me this volume, wherein The Duel is published in isolation for the first time. So I finally read it this week, and it turns out to be among the best books I have ever read.

It concerns two officers in Napoleon's Grand Army who duel on several occasions over many years. It evokes the spirit of dueling which I always thought stupid. Yet both men are dignified and fallible, and simply operated in another time. It's billed as ironic and anti-duelling but I think it's actually more ambivalent about duelling. And it certainly marries tender feelings to wilful violence. A first, thought-provoking and ultimately very touching novella.
