This review is from: Naughty and Nice (Paperback)
Length:: 0:37 Mins

I was given this by a friend who knows that I like Bruce Timm's artwork and animation, and initially I was delighted, but quickly found that I had a few reservations about it.

Here are my pros and cons.

CON:

It's a somewhat 'cut-down' version of the original 'Naughty and Nice' book. The format is smaller (but only *slightly* smaller - see below.)

More importantly, some of the original content is missing. Illustrations of licensed comic book characters are omitted to avoid licensing fees so that this version can be offered at a cheaper price. Since I particularly enjoyed BT's take on Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and other comic book characters, this was, for me, this book's biggest disappointment.

What you're left with is still a nice collection of Timm's work, but the content is almost exclusively a series of female nudes. I would have enjoyed a bit more variety - and I DO sorely miss those comic book characters!

If you can imagine a portfolio of life drawings, but done in a toony style, you'll have a fair idea of what you're getting. The excellent introduction to the book (by Jim Steranko) describes them as 'breezy, not sleazy', and I think that's a mostly fair description.

PRO:

First, you have to wonder in what bizarre universe this could be described as a 'pocket book.' Unless your pockets are about 8 by 10 inches, you'll have difficulty fitting this in. In short, it's a goodly-sized book, and not by any means the teeny-tiny-postcard-sized-mini-booklet the title would suggest.

Second, the quality is great. It's a paperback, but from start to finish it's printed on glossy high-quality paper.

Third, it's affordable. The original version was quite expensive to start with, but now that it's become something of a collector's item, sellers are charging extortionate amounts of money for it.

In short, if you're a fan of Bruce Timm's style, and you haven't already got the original Naughty and Nice, you're probably going to want this. It's a nice book in itself, and for anyone who wants to develop their own 'toony' style, you could do a lot worse than to start by copying the illustrations in this volume.

Because of the missing content, I was tempted to make this a four-star review, but so long as you know what you're getting, at this price it probably warrants five stars.
