5.0 out of 5 stars A Spiritually-Inspired Book!, 22 July 1999
By A Customer
So much of "doing" yoga seems to focus on extreme physical performance. Judith's philosophy of just relaxing and doing it, is a great relief. Practicing yoga can become another chore, another ritual. This book is a welcome paradigm shift in the yoga world! For the eternal beginner in all of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book on Yoga and stress reduction., 5 Dec 1998
By A Customer
I have read just about every yoga book available and Relax and Renew is one of the best. This book's clear instruction and helpful photographs guide the reader into an experience of truly restorative and healing yoga. It is especially useful for those interested in how to practice yoga for stress reduction and relief of back pain, headaches, insomnia, and jet lag. It also teaches restful yoga postures women can practice to relieve the discomfort of their monthly cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. Moreoever, the depth of Relax and Renew makes this a book you want to return to again and again. Judith Lasater is an inspiring teacher, and her wisdom is abundantly available in this book, which I recommend highly to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a relief!, 8 Dec 1998
By A Customer
I bought Relax and Renew because of the subtitle: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times. It has lived up to its promise. Before reading it, I didn't know much about yoga or that there was even something called "restorative yoga." Now, I am learning the importance of relaxation and of making time for myself. What a relief! Thank you, Judith Lasater.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the Yoga Library, 4 Mar 2013

This review is from: Relax and Renew (Paperback)
This review comes from the perspective of a yoga teacher.

If you're not a yoga teacher and are recovering from illness or co-living with chronic problems, this book will give you wonderful and supportive ways to receive the benefits of yoga practice without any risk of physical strain.

However, if you are a yoga teacher, and especially if you have been trained or influenced by the Iyengar teaching, I imagine you will find that you already know a lot of the suggestions here, and there is a lot of repetition. For example there are 5 variations on the Basic Relaxation Pose, and 7 variations of a supported backbend.

I am glad to have purchased the book. I have integrated the postures and sequences into my classes and into my own practice, and am very, very glad to have done so. Powerful and deep stuff, to be sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommendable, 27 Aug 2010
my yoga teacher uses this book to prepare relaxation classes once or twice a year. The poses are extremely beneficial for me. They help to relax and have deeper sleep but they also help with my asthma. This is why I bought it as I want to use it as often as possible.
The book is very well written and easy to understand. I very highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The art of relaxation made easy., 5 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book is all about letting go by doing nothing purposefully. Judith Lasater, a very experienced Iyengar yoga teacher, shows the reader in words and pictures how to use everyday props (e.g., blankets, pillows, walls and floors) to travel the highway to the state of relaxation. I had the opportunity to practice restorative yoga with Ms. Lasater in Montana about two years ago and I can attest to the fact this yoga works to relax both the mental and physical muscles in the body if practiced regularly. Since most people can't go off to Montana to practice yoga, this book is the next best thing to being there.

5.0 out of 5 stars totally effective, 15 Jan 1999

The exercises in this book are really restorative. It is such a pleasure doing them. My husband is a macho athlete, and even he appreciates the deep relaxation derived from the 'exercises'. I feel quite renewed at the end of a session drawn from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who wants to reduce stress in their life!, 17 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Judith Lasater's wonderful book on restorative yoga, Relax & Renew, sits near my yoga mat in plain view, reminding me to take time everyday to restore and replenish myself.

Two years ago my already busy life as a mother, yoga teacher, writer and community activist got even busier when I decided to run for public office and serve on our local City Council. Instead of drinking coffee to keep going, I practice the restorative poses taught in Judith Lasater's book. I refer to Relax & Renew regularly to deepen my own understanding of restorative yoga and also to better instruct my students.

For busy people juggling many hats, I recommend this book highly! A must read for politicians and anyone wanting to reduce stress in their life!

After only skimming the surface of this boook im aware book will take time to work through. Even so its nicely presented & wil be of most use to serious yoga enthusiasts or people who have already attended restorative wokshops. This type of yoga can be powerfull but also faffy to set up & takes various props & aids. You may find two or thre postures that suite you Or to use within your other routines or your movement is restricted or at paticular times in life, after illnesss or trauma!
