5.0 out of 5 stars See the film and buy the book.
A superbly well-written account of one man's experience of being: kidnapped; sold like a chattel; subjected to all the horrors inherent in a viciously cruel system of agricultural production and inhumane exploitation. See the film and buy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the film!, 14 Feb. 2014

The film concentrates on the violence meted out on the slaves. I could not watch it all. The book gives a wonderfully rounded picture of the whole event - still an horrific thing to happen to solomon but written in a way that allowed me to engage properly with the various characters. Gave more insight into the differing characters of the various slave owners - and told about those who tried to help him along the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reminder of what was and what still is!, 2 Feb. 2014

This was a new voice to me and it was very frank and difficult to bear at times. I loved this book and wish many people could read and learn from it. The references to Uncle Tom was very powerful as it encapsulated the pity and neglected view of those held in bondage ! I also liked the additional stories/interviews of former slaves and how indoctrinated and imprisoned mentally they still were even after all those years "free"! What did freedom really do for them??? They felt alienated and disenfranchised by the new America - ironically, a feeling , many still feel today.
