5.0 out of 5 stars Rhodesian Bush War
I totally enjoyed this book by Tim Bax. It is a first person account of the Bush war in Rhodesia by Mr. Bax who was in the elite Selous Scouts.

Mr Bax doesnt start this book during the war like so many authors, but starts from his humble beings being rasied in Africa, through his parents divorce. He draws on on child hood into his growth as a young man to show...

3.0 out of 5 stars Liked it but...
I found the book entertaining to a certain extent, but the authors condescension towards the SADF and the South African Police and his unadulterated jingoism grated somewhat... Add to this the fact that he couldn't even get SADF ranks right (the rank Lt Col did not exist during the authors service in the SADF, the equivalent rank was that of Commandant )...

Mr Bax doesnt start this book during the war like so many authors, but starts from his humble beings being rasied in Africa, through his parents divorce. He draws on on child hood into his growth as a young man to show how and why he becomes a scout.

I dont want to go into details about the book specifics like so many other reviewers. Other then to say it is an excellent book with photo and maps. Tim Bax takes his time to explain the world he lived in and fought in and he does it with courage and color he take you there in vived color.

Excellent and enjoyable

This review is from: Three Sips of Gin. Dominating the Battlespace with Rhodesia's Elite Selous Scouts. (Paperback)
Its the best book about the struggle in Rhodesia I have read so far. it is honest and reveals the true situation in the 1970 s until the end of the great country. Although it is a personal story, it is a very political book. It might not be politically correct, but it makes it clear that the West and mainly the US and England are to be blamed for the aweful result.

Having said that as having served in the SADF I was pleased to see that he acknowledges the fighting prowess of the South Africans in his book.

In all good , but not good enough ...

Brought this for my Dad, he loved this book the detail and the writing style, he told me several times how he could not put it down and he has told just about everyone he meets how much he enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rhodesian Terrorist War - A Light-hearted Approach, 22 Nov 2013

This review is from: Three Sips of Gin. Dominating the Battlespace with Rhodesia's Elite Selous Scouts. (Paperback)
Tim's personal recollections gathered here is not just another book that reflects on the Rhodesian Bush War. What sets "Three Sips Of Gin" apart from other Rhodesian War accounts is the jovial and hilarious manner with which the author addresses an otherwise painful and traumatizing setting; the Rhodesian Bush War itself!

This trend can be picked up as early as the first chapters, namely within his educational odysseys in his native Tanzania, only to stay course throughout the book.

An exceptional account that encompasses the Rhodesian Terrorist War from its inception to its closure, and what is outstanding, in a light-hearted mode.

Great book! Compulsory reading for those interested in Southern Africa of the 1970's!
