5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!, 13 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Stumbled onto 'Charlie Fox' by accident. Bought Killer Instinct a few weeks ago and was hooked. So much that within a space of six weeks I've read all ten books!! Thing is, is Charlie going to get her other attackers? Are her personal issues, particularly with Sean, going to be resolved? I'm going to be a nightmare to live with until the next book!!! The Fox Five books also excellent reading as side stories giving more of an insight to 'Charlie'.

Hurry up with book 11 please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unputdownable!, 5 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had been waiting for this book for months and was not disappointed. It was action packed from beginning to end and whilst it addressed loads of issues, still left a few questions!

Most books at this stage (10 books in) start to get a bit stale or repetitive but this is going from strength to strength. Each book is very different and whilst Charlie's personal life and her ongoing issues are in each book, you could still read this as a standalone.

Roll on book 11!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling, unpredictable and impossible to put down, 1 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some series run out of oomph or become so much about the next step in a character's life that the 'thrill or 'adventure' becomes subsidiary to the storyline. Not so with this book.

In this latest episode, Charlie Fox has to find out just how much she can rely on Sean Meyer, former insructor, mentor, lover and coma victim. Charlie isn't allowed a fairy tale post coma recovery of her partner and the stress of having to work with someone who is no longer predictable adds to the suspense of the book.

Improvising in a situation without a weapon, Charlie uses all her skills to survive and keep people safe... in a situation where she can't trust anyone to be whom they seem.

Life is rarely full of completely resolvable situations and the research and writing in this book doesn't disappoint. Half a can of worms tidied up, two more opened. Read, be scared, cheer for the goodies and look at your maglite with new eyes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Hard in the Big Easy, 13 Nov. 2012

In this latest instalment of one of my very favourite series currently being written, Charlie Fox is assigned to guard a VIP in New Orleans for a Katrina gala benefit - but with encounters with old `friends', a whole host of plots, and a very fragile relationship with Sean Meyer to contend with, nothing is going to be easy for Charlie.

Wow, Sharp really puts her characters through it! One of the things I love about this series is that Sharp never cops out -with no sentimentality, no easy, happy-ever-after endings, our characters are always on the edge. This is a raw, sometimes brutal, read - not because of the body count (which is particularly high in this book) but precisely because our characters find killing an unnerving experience and one not to be taken lightly.

You do really need to read the last few books in order as since Third Strike they're following an overarching plot arc and to read the latest one without following the emotional coils and wrenches of Fourth Day and Fifth Victim especially will be to miss out.

At this series' heart is the fraught, complex and extremely troubled relationship between Charlie and Sean Meyer - and this outing winds their association up even tighter.

Sharp is an uncompromising writer - and this is brilliant. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Easy, 10 May 2013
By
Gloria Feit (Long Beach, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Die Easy (Charlie Fox Crime Thrillers) (Paperback)
This sixth and newest entry in the series brings back Charlotte ("Charlie") Fox and her lover, Sean Meyer, a junior partner in Armstrong-Meyer, an elite "close-protection" [read "bodyguard"] organization. This time around they are tasked with the safety of one of the men behind a celebrity fundraising event for the still nascent recovery of the city of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina several years ago. But the soiree doesn't go exactly as planned.

Charlie and Sean are still dealing with events in their past, Charlie's much further back that Sean's: She left the service after a court-martial and then an "equally disastrous" civil trial following her gang rape many years ago. Sean's trauma was much more recent: He had been in a coma for months after a near-fatal shooting while on their last job, leaving him with only scattered memory of the last four years, and now dealing with "the long road back to some kind of physical and mental fitness," the question being whether or not he could still handle the job.

In addition to the man Charlie and Sean have been hired to protect, nearly all of the other well-healed attendees at the event have brought their own bodyguards with them, one of these, unfortunately for our protagonists, being Vic Morton, with whom Charlie has a history, and not a good one (gross understatement): He was one of the men who had raped Charlie years ago.

When a robbery aboard the paddle-wheeler on which the event is taking place escalates into a hostage situation, Charlie and Sean have their hands full, and Sean's abilities are well and truly tested, as are the loyalties of both of them. The author has once again delivered a well-written, taut and suspenseful novel, and it is recommended (as have all the earlier series entries).

This was another excellent Charlie Fox novel with all the normal attributes, criminal activity, clashes with authority, violent clashes in which she plays a full part. Strongly recommended.

I enjoy these books. They start off quite gently but you soon get swept up with the story and try not to race to the end.
