This review is from: John Redmond: The National Leader (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding book on the second half of the life of a major Irish nationalist and patriot. It was once said that "All political careers end in failure", and Redmond's seemed a catastrophic failure, overwhelmed by the impact of World War I on Anglo-Irish politics. But the time has perhaps come for a more measured assessment of his achievement, and acknowledgement of his rightful place in Irish history; for in many years, the Good Friday agreement of 1998, signed between Irish nationalists, whether Taoiseach Bertie Ahern or leader of Sinn Fein Gerry Adams, and Irish unionists such as David Trimble, and British political leaders like Tony Blair, was doing what Redmond long ago recognized would have to be done, but could not do.
