I really enjoyed this - a fictionalised account of the writing of Shostakovich's famous Leningrad Symphony. Brings the reader right into the middle of the famous siege of the city, and both imagines and describes how various real-life characters might have lived during that awful time. Like the symphony itself, uplifting and great.

This beautifully written story, quiet and moving ,.realistically portraits a boy moving from a humble agricultural background to a world of learning. Although he becomes part of academic life he can never leave his background of low expectation behind and this influences his life and marriage as well as his career.
