5.0 out of 5 stars Piquing my interest in Classical Music further..., 21 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A quick, yet highly enjoyable and thorough coverage of pivotal moments in classical music. Some moments have prompted me to go and do a bit of music research to find pieces referenced to have a listen myself. Well done to all at Classic FM.

This review is from: 50 Moments That Rocked the Classical Musical World (Classic FM) (Hardcover)
Authors Darren Henley and Sam Jackson from Classic FM (Managing Director and Managing Editor respectively) have put together a highly readable book full of facts and important milestones in the history and development of classical music.

The underlying aim is to compile a small volume of 50 key events which can be considered milestones in classical music. A difficult task - there are undoubtedly many more than 50 - and one which will probably raise debate and prompt readers to suggest their own ideas. This fact is anticipated by the Classic FM producers who invite readers to provide feedback and their own suggestions via their website. Expect to see volume two `50 More Moments...'.

Of the moments listed in the book many are irrefutably worthy of inclusion, such as the earliest signs of man-made musical instruments (discovery of 50,000 year old bones carved into simple woodwind flutes), and the introduction of written musical notation. The account of the evolution and development of polyphony (music with two or more simultaneous melodies) is particularly well documented, and the section on the influence of video game soundtracks brings the book right up to date for 2014.

This is a fascinating insight into classical music's big moments, and the changing perception and appreciation of the genre is well recognised and reflected by the authors in this highly readable 240 page hardcover.

Loved this book, and things I thought I knew weren't quite accurate. Its always good to learn new facts about things that you thought you knew. I would advise anyone who likes classical music to get this, its great, and the fact that the chapters aren't very long, is excellent if you want to read for a few minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Classic FM, 29 Oct. 2014

This review is from: 50 Moments That Rocked the Classical Musical World (Classic FM) (Hardcover)
I liked this book. It was fun and it told me the odd fascinating thing I hadn't already learned from the other Classic FM books or Howard Goodall's Story of Music. Therein lies the problem for me. Classic FM do a wonderful job of making classical music approachable and interesting for everyone. Unfortunately, all their books tend to regurgitate the same things in the same ways using different formats (A-Z, factoids, 50 moments). This is a great book to have and I am happy to award it five stars but, honestly, if you've already read "Everything You Wanted to Know..." or "The Story of Music", don't bother. In addition, the music from the Cadbury's "Everyone's a Fruit & Nutcase" is not from the Nutcracker's, Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy, its from the Nutcracker's Dance of the Reed Pipes.
