2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
It wasn't at all what I had hoped for. Not much in the way of illustrations and very boring text.

This review is from: Columba's Iona: A New History (Hardcover)
This new book, beautifully written by Rosalind K. Marshall, one of Scotland's finest literary historians, presents a new and fascinating overview of Iona from Columba's time to the present day. It gives meticulous attention to the reconstruction of the Abbey under the leadership of the Rev George MacLeod, and to the Iona Community. The island is often described as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. It was certainly the springboard for the Christianising of the North, and a staging post between Scotland and Ireland in terms of both faith and artistic cultures. Scotland and the island have both, since Columba, moved through Celtic Christianity, Roman (Benedictine on Iona), Protestant, to what the author describes as 'our own apparently secular age'. The Abbey and its grounds are administered by the Iona Cathedral Trust who commissioned this indispensable book to mark the 1450th anniversary of Columba's arrival. Delightfully laid out, with three wonderful photographic sections, it is a joy to handle and to read.
